Skilla Baby Is “Standing on It” With His Debut Album The Price of Fame

Skilla Baby has spent the last few years becoming one of the most recognizable voices coming out of Detroit, but his latest release feels like the beginning of something bigger.

On August 21, the rapper released his debut studio album, The Price of Fame, a 22-track project that includes “Standing on It,” along with appearances from Nas, Chris Brown, Bryson Tiller and gospel artist Erica Campbell. The album also includes production from names like DJ Toomp, Hitmaka and Warryn Campbell.

“Standing on It” arrives with an official visualizer, but the record fits into a much larger story Skilla is telling throughout the album. The Price of Fame isn't simply about finally reaching a certain level in music. He's using the project to talk about what success costs, what happens behind the scenes and what it looks like to continue growing while life around you is changing.

That perspective carries more weight considering what Skilla has experienced recently. In 2025, he survived a shooting in Detroit, and he has since spoken publicly about rebuilding himself physically, mentally and spiritually. More recently, he's also discussed his decision to leave Detroit as he thinks differently about protecting himself, his family and the business he's building.

His career was already moving before that. Skilla signed with Geffen Records in 2022 and continued building through projects like We Eat the Most, The Coldest and Crack Music 3. In 2024, fans voted him into XXL's Freshman Class as the People's Champ, putting another national spotlight on an artist who had already been developing a loyal audience in Detroit and beyond.

What's interesting about this stage of Skilla Baby's career is that the personality that originally made people pay attention hasn't disappeared as the opportunities have gotten bigger. His music can be funny, conversational, melodic or serious depending on the record, and The Price of Fame gives him enough room to show all of it.

He's also been intentional with this rollout. Before the album arrived, Skilla released records including “GYSM,” “Face Card” with Chris Brown and Bryson Tiller, and “Show Me Love.” Alongside the album release, he dropped the official video for “For Sure,” continuing to give listeners visuals around the project rather than treating release day as the end of the campaign.

For an artist who has spent years working toward his debut album, The Price of Fame feels like Skilla Baby taking inventory of where he is now and what it took to get there.

And with “Standing on It,” the title pretty much says the rest.
